                             A WORD FROM OUR PASTOR

Great and Mighty Things

Jeremiah 3:33

Do you believe in prayer?  I know the answer is yes. A few things are absolutely essential to the victorious Christian life and prayer is one of them.  We need to learn to talk to God about everything, anytime.  You do know the stanza of the song that says "What a privilege to carry, everything to God in Prayer," don't you?  Jeremiah was attempting to get the Jewish nation to trust God.  Jerusalem had fallen. Exiles had been taken away to Babylon. Jeremiah's task was to keep calling the nation to repent and trust God despite the discouragement.  In this verse we have;

A Great Invitation - Call unto me

In times of despair remember God.  We have an open invitation to Consult God, to Communicate with Him and Commune with Him in prayer.  Matthew 7:7 says "Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you." And Isaiah 55:6 says "Seek the Lord while he may be found; call on Him while He is near.  One translation for the Hebrew word for call is to cry out.  It gives the idea of urgency.  Sometime we have those types of prayers and other times our prayers are thanksgiving or worship.  Whatever we are praying for, we can go to God.  He is available to us.   1) Call. You must want the answer enough to pray. 2)Unto. You have to get outside of your own thinking. 3)Me. You direct prayer to the Lord.

Jesus said "And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. John 14:13

A Great God -  I will answer

James tells us, "The prayer of a righteous man availeth much." James 5:16.  When you call on God He will answer.  Someone said the answer is sometimes go, sometimes slow, other times grow and sometimes no - but He will give an answer.  At the Spreading Oak Church God seems to answer our prayers in surprising ways on a fairly consistent basis. We have had so many answers to prayer that we can't count them.  We pray for people we don't see and get reports that God answered.

Remember -

Abraham Prayed for Sodom   Genesis 18:20-33

   The Persistent Widow   Luke 18:1-8.

Jonah prayed in the Whale   Jonah 2:2-7

Moses called on God at the Red Sea Ex.14:13-22

Jesus prayed in the mountain, in the garden and on the cross.

Great and Mighty Things - I will show you

Thank God that He would hear and answer sinners.  (A broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise Psalms 51:17.)   He will show in answered prayer Great and Mighty things.  The nation Israel was in captivity and the promise was that if they sought God in prayer He would heal the land (2 Chronicles 7:14). In this chapter we see God promise how He would answer prayer.
He would do Great and mighty things like

Heal the land v6                   Grant peace v6 (absent of war in this verse)         Restore the nation v7

Forgive and cleanse them from sin v8                   Restore Joy and worship of His great Name v9-13

God is not slack concerning his promises. He is able to do exceeding abundantly beyond all that we ask or think Eph. 3:20, 21. He will do Great and Mighty things for you if you go to Him in prayer.  Let your request be made known to God.!!!!!"
