Woman of the Bible
Hannah – I Samuel 1
Hannah the wife of Elkanah,
Mother of Samuel
Hannah’s presence in the Bible occurred at a transitioning phase. She lived during the time when judges were ruling over Israel but transitioning to a point where Kings would begin to rule.
Hannah’s significance in the Bible has often focused on powerful prayer which caused her to receive favor from God and ultimately changed her circumstance. There are some seemingly insignificant things mentioned in the Bible about Hannah that can be overlooked. Often times the primary focus of the study of Hannah in the Bible reveals the following;
In spite of Hannah’s barrenness and the fact that she was continuously ridiculed by Peninnah, Hannah had faith. She worshipped God and asked him to remove her barrenness. The Bible states that Hannah had bitterness of soul. (I Samuel 1:10) and wept and prayed to God. Hannah had so much faith that when she went to the temple she worshipped God without concern of the perception those around her would have. Hannah was so caught up in her worship the Bible says her lips were moving but no voice was heard. (I Samuel 1:13). Eli the priest assumed she was drunk and reprimanded her. Hannah made a vow to God that if He would remove her barrenness and give her a son, she would give him back to the Lord and never cut his hair. Hannah kept her vow to the Lord and sent her son Samuel to study with the Priest Eli, and Samuel became the greatest prophet in the Bible. Because of her faithfulness to God He blessed her with other children.
Hannah is an inspiration to women of today for several reasons. She was struggling with her barrenness and did not wallow in her self pity. She trusted that God would change her situation. It could be presumed from reading the text that Hannah didn’t let her situation affect the way she carried herself, hence the constant ridicule from Peninnah. It could also be presumed that the people around Hannah thought she had it “going on.” Although she was barren she was given a double portion which could mean she didn’t want for any material possessions. It was the area of her life in which she was unproductive that yielded the greatest results. Hannah’s faith remained constant as she stayed in prayer expecting God would grant her the desires of her heart. Although tortured by Peninnah she did not retaliate, she remained steadfast in her faith. She worshipped God and did not give thought to how others perceived her way of worshipping. We as women should evaluate our lives and see if the areas of our lives that are barren, the things in our lives that cause us to be bitter in our souls are areas that God wants to use for His Glory.
